Lush is a granular atmosphere engine. It takes whatever you put into it — a guitar, a vocal, a room mic, a synth pad — and grows a space around it out of the material itself. Four modes, pitch-tracked grains that stay in key, and a Freeze that holds a cloud for as long as you want it.
Grains are laid end to end into a continuous bed. Play a chord and it keeps ringing after your hands have left, in the timbre of whatever you played.
Each grain plays retrograde, so notes swell into themselves instead of decaying. The classic backwards-reverb gesture, built from your own signal rather than an impulse.
Grains are transposed as they scatter, stacking upper octaves into the cloud. Bright, glassy, and still recognisably the source.
Each grain slides in pitch across its own lifetime, so the cloud drifts and smears rather than sitting still. Motion without an LFO.
Most granular processors scatter grains wherever the buffer happens to sit, which is why they drift out of tune the moment the music moves. Lush tracks the pitch of the incoming signal and quantises grain transposition to it, so the cloud follows the song instead of fighting it. You can put it across a whole mix and it will still sound like it belongs there.
Freeze stops the buffer taking new material and lets the existing grains keep circulating. The cloud holds for as long as you leave it — useful as a transition, or as a pad you play over.
